Gloucester, County, Va. Situated in the east part of the state, and contains 280 square miles. Organized in 1652. It has York River on its south west border. Capital, Gloucester Court House. There were in 1840, neat cattle 7,778, sheep 4,914, swine 14,162, wheat 56,325 bush, produced, Indian corn 306,564, barley 2,748, oats 61,775, potatoes 12,767, cotton 8,439 pounds; 20 stores, capital $86,600; 3 tanneries, 17 grist mills, 3 saw mills. Capital in manufactures $27,710. 4 academies, 93 students, 10 schools, 216 scholars. Population, whites 4,412, slaves 5,791, free colored 612; total, 10,715.
